UPGRADING AGEING WATER SUPPLY PIPES

Why Replace Lead Water Pipes?

Many properties built before 1970 may still have lead pipework within the private water supply or internal plumbing. Lead can enter drinking water when water remains in contact with this older pipework, which is why property owners are often advised to replace lead supplies with modern alternatives.

MJY Utilities provides lead pipe replacement for homeowners, landlords, businesses and property developers across Walsall, Wolverhampton and the wider West Midlands. We assess the existing supply, identify the likely pipe route and recommend an appropriate replacement method.

Older lead pipes may also contribute to restricted water flow, poor pressure and an increased likelihood of leaks as the pipework ages. Replacing the supply with modern MDPE pipework can provide a more reliable connection and help support the water requirements of the property.

Where ground conditions allow, we can use impact moling and other trenchless methods to install the new supply with less excavation than a traditional open trench. This can reduce disturbance to gardens, paths, driveways and other finished surfaces.

HOW LEAD PIPE REPLACEMENT WORKS

Replacing Your Lead Supply With Modern Pipework

The first stage is to establish whether lead pipework is present and identify which section of the water supply is affected. Lead pipes are usually dull grey, relatively soft and may have a swollen joint near the internal stop tap, although a professional assessment may be needed where the pipe is underground or concealed.

We then assess the route between the property and the external water connection. Depending on the layout, access and ground conditions, the new supply may follow the existing route or take a more practical alternative route around buildings, landscaping or other obstacles.

The old lead supply is disconnected and replaced with modern water pipework suitable for the property. For external underground supplies, this will normally involve durable MDPE pipe, while any internal connection work will be completed using appropriate approved materials.

The new pipe is then connected, flushed and tested for leaks, water flow and pressure. Where work is required on the water company’s side of the boundary, we can explain the next steps and help coordinate the private supply work around their requirements.
